Frederic Baraga Arrives in America

His heart's desire took him from the mild winters of Slovenia and Vienna to the inhospitable winters of northern Michigan. But his desire was to save the souls of the "savages" of that land. Bishop Fenwick of Cincinnati — all of Michigan was still part of the Diocese of Cincinnati — was only too happy to oblige. And so, in 1831, he got his wish.
